Monday - Magnolia Plantation

Today we visited the Magnolia Plantation with our new friends, Ross, Ashlyne, and Kyler, and their friend Beth. Founded in 1676 by the Drayton family, Magnolia Plantation has survived the centuries from the American Revolution through the Civil War and beyond. It is the oldest public tourist site in the Lowcountry, and the oldest public gardens in America, opening its doors to visitors in 1870 to view the thousands of beautiful flowers and plants in its famous gardens. We all enjoyed the plantation very much, the high point for the kids was definitely the lizards and peacocks!

Tomorrow a surveyor is coming to put a scope into the boat to find where the water is coming from. Probably the boat will be hauled on Wednesday is our guess.

The plantation looks amazing, but it's hard to look at the slave quarters when you see how the owners were living.

The lizard comment reminds me of when I took a 5 year old Caroline to the San Diego zoo - full of amazing animals, and when asked what her favorite animal was she replied 'the catfish' .... a non-zoo animal that just happened to live in the pond there.
